Student Worker Help Guide: Opening/Closing & Daily Responsibilities

Opening Responsibilities

  • Set thermostats to 72 degrees. These are located behind the front desk, CMC, SRC, classroom, outside conference room, room 205, and next to rare book collection.
  • Make sure library is neat—straighten chairs and tables, pick up trash and belongings, etc.
  • Check book drop and check-in books.

Closing Responsibilities

  • Fifteen minutes before the library closes, walk through the library and let students know the library will be closing soon.
  • Walk through the entire library and make sure the library is neat and in order. Throw away trash and wipe down tables, if needed. Place any found personal belongings in lost and found behind the front desk. If it is a valuable item (phone, wallet, laptop, etc.), please take to Ms. Rachel’s or Ms. Allison’s office and leave a note saying where it was found.
  • Make sure Smart Boards, projectors, and TVs in the study rooms and classrooms are turned off.
  • Set thermostats to 72 degrees. These are located behind the front desk, CMC, SRC, classroom, outside conference room, room 205, and next to rare book collection.
  • Check all rooms, including the bathrooms, café, and stairwell for patrons. Everyone must be out of the library before you leave!

Daily Responsibilities

  • At the beginning of each shift, walk through the library (downstairs and upstairs) and observe what is going on. It is good for you to know who is in the library and it also shows patrons that you are available to help. As you are walking around, straighten chairs and tables, pick up trash, look for books that need to be re-shelved, etc. If you are working for longer than one hour, this should be done at the top of every hour. If we all make an effort to do these things, we can make the library a more welcoming place.
  • During your shift, make an effort to notice people and what they are doing. If someone looks lost or confused, ask them if you can help them. Our library is open to the public, so there will be people coming in who have never been here before. Also, just because someone is a student, don’t assume they know how to find what they are looking for. Always be available and willing to help. Remember, you are free to do homework, play on devices, etc., but those things always come second to helping a patron.
  • Check-in and shelve books. If there are books in the basket at the front desk, check them in. If there are books on the book truck, behind the front desk, shelve them.
  • Keep the front desk neat and clean.
  • If you have been assigned a section of shelf reading, you should work on this for 30 minutes per hour you work. If you are alone at the desk, let your supervisor know you will be away from the desk.
